Mo Ibrahim, born Mohammed Ibrahim, is a Sudanese-British businessman and philanthropist, best known for founding Celtel International, one of the first mobile phone companies to serve Africa and the Middle East. Born in Sudan, Ibrahim moved to the United Kingdom for higher education, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alexandria, a Master’s degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Bradford, and a PhD in Mobile Communications from the University of Birmingham. Ibrahim began his career as a technical director for British Telecom (BT), where he played a key role in developing the first mobile communication network in the UK. In 1998, he founded Celtel, which rapidly expanded across Africa and was sold to Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications Company for $3.4 billion in 2005. Post-Celtel, Ibrahim turned his focus to philanthropy, establishing the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in 2006 to promote good governance and leadership in Africa. The foundation awards the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, which offers a substantial monetary reward to African leaders who have demonstrated excellence in office and have transitioned power peacefully.
