Newton Leroy “Newt” Gingrich is an American politician, author, and political consultant who served as the 50th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He was born on June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Gingrich was a key figure in the Republican Party during the 1990s and played a pivotal role in the “Republican Revolution,” which led to the GOP gaining control of the House for the first time in 40 years. Gingrich attended Emory University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in history, and later completed a Ph.D. in European history at Tulane University. He taught history at West Georgia College before embarking on a political career. Gingrich was elected to Congress in 1978 and served until his resignation in 1999 following ethical controversies.
