Biography

Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, born on November 22, 1986, in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, is a former South African sprint runner who gained widespread fame and later notoriety. Pistorius, nicknamed the “Blade Runner,” was born with fibular hemimelia, leading to the amputation of both legs below the knee when he was just 11 months old. Despite this, he went on to become a Paralympic champion and competed in both Paralympic and Olympic Games, making history as the first double-leg amputee to participate in the Olympics. Pistorius’s athletic career began in earnest in 2004 when he took up running while recovering from a knee injury sustained while playing rugby. His natural talent quickly became evident, and he soon began to dominate Paralympic track events. He won gold medals in the 200 meters at the 2004 Athens Paralympics and went on to achieve multiple world records in T44 events. Pistorius’s career reached its zenith in 2012 when he competed in the London Olympics, running in the 400 meters and the 4×400 meters relay. However, his life took a dramatic turn in 2013 when he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. In 2014, he was found guilty of culpable homicide, which was later changed to murder on appeal in 2015. Pistorius is currently serving his prison sentence.
