Oscar Palmer Robertson, also known as “The Big O,” is an American former professional basketball player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Born on November 24, 1938, in Charlotte, Tennessee, Robertson’s family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, when he was a child. He attended Crispus Attucks High School, where he led his team to two consecutive state championships, becoming the first African-American team to win the Indiana state title. Robertson played college basketball at the University of Cincinnati, where he was a three-time consensus All-American and won numerous awards, including the USBWA College Player of the Year and the Naismith College Player of the Year. He was the first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in scoring for three consecutive years. In 1960, Robertson was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals as the first overall pick. He made an immediate impact in the NBA, winning the Rookie of the Year award.
