Raghuram Govind Rajan is an Indian economist and the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is best known for his tenure as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from September 2013 to September 2016. Rajan was born in Bhopal, India, and his father was a senior officer in the Indian Intelligence Bureau. After completing his engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1985, Rajan pursued an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and later received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Rajan’s academic work has often focused on banking, corporate finance, and economic growth. Before joining the RBI, he served as the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2003 to 2006. During his term at the RBI, Rajan implemented significant reforms to stabilize and improve India’s economy, earning him international acclaim. He has authored several books, including “Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy,” which won the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award in 2010.
