Biography
Ralph H. Baer, often referred to as the “Father of Video Games,” was a pioneering inventor whose work laid the foundation for the modern video game industry. Born in Germany, Baer and his family fled to the United States in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution. Baer served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later attended the American Television Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in television engineering. In 1966, while working as an engineer at Sanders Associates, Baer conceived the idea of playing games on a television screen. This led to the development of the “Brown Box,” the first home video game console, which was later licensed to Magnavox and released as the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972. Throughout his career, Baer held over 150 patents and received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Technology in 2006.
