Biography

Robert Rauschenberg, born Milton Ernest Rauschenberg, was an influential American painter and graphic artist whose early works anticipated the pop art movement. He is best known for his “Combines” of the 1950s, in which non-traditional materials and objects were employed in innovative combinations. Rauschenberg’s approach was sometimes called “Neo-Dada,” a label he shared with the painter Jasper Johns. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1993 and was a pivotal figure in the art world until his death in 2008. Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas, and initially studied pharmacology before serving in the U.S. Navy. After World War II, he studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and Black Mountain College under Josef Albers, where he began to develop his signature style. Throughout his career, Rauschenberg worked in multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking. He was also known for his collaborations with dancers and choreographers, particularly with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
