Rodney Cline Carew, known as Rod Carew, is a Panamanian former professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels from 1967 to 1985. Carew was born on a train in the town of Gatun in the Panama Canal Zone. His family moved to the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, New York, when he was a teenager. He was discovered by scout Monroe Katz while playing sandlot baseball. Carew is one of the most accomplished hitters in baseball history, boasting a career batting average of .328 and accumulating over 3,000 hits. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 and is a seven-time American League batting champion.
