Biography

Rodney Mullen, born John Rodney Mullen, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative skateboarders in the history of the sport. Born in Gainesville, Florida, Mullen began skateboarding at the age of 10. His father, a dentist, was initially against the idea of him skateboarding, but eventually allowed him to pursue it as long as he wore protective gear and agreed to discontinue if he got seriously injured. Mullen’s early career was marked by his exceptional talent in freestyle skateboarding, a discipline that emphasizes technical tricks and precise movements. By the age of 14, Mullen had already won his first major competition, the 1979 Oceanside Nationals. Over the next few years, he would go on to dominate the freestyle skateboarding scene, winning numerous championships and solidifying his reputation as a prodigy. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mullen transitioned from freestyle to street skateboarding. During this period, he invented numerous tricks that are now fundamental to the sport, including the flatground ollie, kickflip, heelflip, and 360 flip. These innovations earned him the moniker “The Godfather of Street Skating.” Mullen’s influence extends beyond his technical prowess; he has also contributed to the culture and philosophy of skateboarding.
