Roger Rees was a distinguished Welsh actor and director renowned for his work both on stage and screen. Born on May 5, 1944, in Aberystwyth, Wales, Rees initially pursued a career in art, studying at the Slade School of Fine Art. However, his passion for acting led him to the theatre, where he quickly made a name for himself. Rees’s breakthrough role came with his portrayal of Nicholas Nickleby in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.” His performance earned him both an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. He continued to work with the RSC, appearing in numerous productions, including “Hamlet” and “The Comedy of Errors.” In addition to his stage work, Rees had a successful career in television and film. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Robin Colcord on the hit TV sitcom “Cheers” and as Lord John Marbury on “The West Wing.” Rees also appeared in movies like “The Prestige” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” Rees moved to the United States in the 1980s, where he continued to act and eventually took on directing. He served as Artistic Director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts and the Bristol Old Vic in England. Rees married playwright Rick Elice in 2011. He continued to work until his health declined due to cancer. Roger Rees passed away on July 10, 2015, in New York City.
