Rutger Hauer was a Dutch actor known for his intense and versatile performances in both European and Hollywood films. Born in Breukelen, Netherlands, Hauer was the son of drama teachers. He ran away from home at age 15 to join the Dutch merchant navy but returned to the Netherlands a year later. He then attended drama school but left to join the army. After completing his military service, Hauer returned to acting, gaining fame in the Netherlands with the television series “Floris” (1969), directed by Paul Verhoeven. Hauer’s international breakthrough came with Verhoeven’s 1973 film “Turkish Delight,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He gained further acclaim for his role as Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s science fiction classic “Blade Runner” (1982), delivering the memorable “Tears in Rain” monologue, which he partly improvised. Over his five-decade career, Hauer appeared in numerous films and television series, including “Ladyhawke” (1985), “The Hitcher” (1986), “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1992), and “Batman Begins” (2005). Hauer was also an environmentalist and philanthropist, founding the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, an AIDS awareness organization.
