Saku Koivu is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player who is considered one of the greatest players Finland has ever produced. Born in Turku, Finland, Koivu started his professional career with TPS in the Finnish SM-liiga before being drafted 21st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Koivu’s NHL career spanned 18 seasons, during which he played 13 seasons with the Canadiens and 5 seasons with the Anaheim Ducks. Koivu became the first European-born captain of the Montreal Canadiens in 1999, a position he held for a decade until 2009. He was known for his leadership, resilience, and sportsmanship, especially evident during his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the 2001-2002 season. Despite an uncertain prognosis, Koivu made a remarkable comeback, returning to the ice that same season and helping the Canadiens reach the playoffs.
