McKenzie grew up in North Carolina, where he befriended future folk music star John Phillips. Together, they formed a band called The Abstracts, which later became The Smoothies and eventually The Journeymen. After The Journeymen disbanded, McKenzie pursued a solo career. His iconic song “San Francisco” became an anthem of the 1960s counterculture and the Summer of Love. The song was written by Phillips, who also co-founded The Mamas & the Papas. In the 1980s, McKenzie joined a new iteration of The Mamas & the Papas, performing with the group until the late 1990s.
