Shelley Berkley, born Rochelle Levine, is an American politician who served as the U.S. Representative for Nevada’s 1st congressional district from 1999 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Berkley was known for her strong advocacy on issues such as health care, veterans’ affairs, and education. She was born in New York City and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, with her family during her childhood. Berkley attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
