Biography

Steve Jobs, born Steven Paul Jobs on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, was an American entrepreneur, inventor, and industrial designer. He was the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc., the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar, a member of The Walt Disney Company’s board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar, and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT. Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Jobs was adopted at birth by Paul and Clara Jobs. He attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, but dropped out after one semester, though he continued to audit classes, including one on calligraphy. In 1976, Jobs and Wozniak co-founded Apple in the Jobs family garage. The Apple I was their first product, followed by the Apple II, which was highly successful and established Apple as a major player in the fledgling personal computer industry. After being forced out of Apple in 1985, Jobs founded NeXT, a computer platform development company that specialized in higher education and business markets. In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd., which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. Pixar went on to produce massively successful films like “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” and “The Incredibles.” Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, where he reinvigorated the company with innovative products such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, transforming Apple into one of the world’s most valuable companies. He was known for his visionary outlook, attention to design, and ability to anticipate consumer needs. Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
