Biography
Stokely Carmichael, later known as Kwame Ture, was a prominent civil rights activist and leader in the global Pan-African movement. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Carmichael moved to the United States at the age of 11. He became a U.S. citizen and attended Howard University, where he joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Freedom Riders, advocating for civil rights through nonviolent protest. Carmichael became the chairman of SNCC in 1966 and popularized the term “Black Power,” advocating for racial pride, economic empowerment, and the creation of political and cultural institutions for black people. In the late 1960s, he joined the Black Panther Party and later moved to Guinea, where he continued his activism until his death.
