Biography

Sylvia Alice Earle, an American marine biologist, oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer, has been a pioneer in the field of ocean exploration and conservation for more than six decades. Born in Gibbstown, New Jersey, Earle developed a passion for the ocean at an early age, which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 1955, a Master of Science in 1956, and a Ph.D. from Duke University in 1966. Earle has led more than 100 expeditions and spent over 7,000 hours underwater. She has been a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence since 1998 and was named Time Magazine’s first “Hero for the Planet” in 1998. Additionally, she served as Chief Scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from 1990 to 1992. Earle has dedicated her life to advocating for marine conservation, and she founded Mission Blue, a non-profit organization aimed at establishing marine protected areas around the globe. Earle’s work has earned her numerous accolades, including the TED Prize in 2009, which she used to launch her Mission Blue initiative. Earle continues to inspire and educate people worldwide about the importance of preserving our planet’s oceans.
