Tim Scott, born Timothy Eugene Scott, is an American politician and businessman currently serving as the junior United States Senator from South Carolina. He was appointed to the Senate in 2013 by then-Governor Nikki Haley and subsequently won a special election in 2014 to complete the term. He was re-elected in 2016 and 2022. Prior to his Senate career, Scott served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district from 2011 to 2013, and before that, he was a member of the Charleston County Council and the South Carolina House of Representatives. Tim Scott was born in North Charleston, South Carolina, and raised by a single mother.
