Thomas Andrew Daschle, commonly known as Tom Daschle, is a prominent American politician and lobbyist who served as a U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1987 to 2005. Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Daschle was the eldest of four sons. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1969 with a degree in political science and then served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force until 1972. After his military service, Daschle worked as an aide to South Dakota Senator James Abourezk. In 1978, Daschle was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served four terms. In 1986, he won a seat in the U.S. Senate, where he eventually rose to become the Senate Majority Leader from 2001 to 2003 and the Senate Minority Leader from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2003 to 2005.
