Thomas Carlyle Ford, commonly known as Tom Ford, is an American fashion designer, film director, screenwriter, and producer. Born on August 27, 1961, in Austin, Texas, Ford initially showed an interest in acting and moved to New York City to study art history at New York University. However, he soon transferred to Parsons The New School for Design, where he studied architecture before switching to fashion. Ford’s breakthrough in fashion came when he joined Gucci in 1990 as the brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer. By 1994, he had ascended to the role of creative director, revitalizing the struggling brand with his bold and glamorous designs. Under his leadership, Gucci’s sales increased dramatically, and he was instrumental in the company’s acquisition of Yves Saint Laurent, where he also served as creative director.
