Warren Edward Spahn was an American professional baseball pitcher, regarded as one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Spahn played the majority of his career with the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, and later with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Spanning a career from 1942 to 1965, Spahn was known for his exceptional pitching skills, durability, and remarkable longevity in the sport. Spahn was born in Buffalo, New York, and he grew up playing baseball in his neighborhood. He signed with the Boston Braves in 1940 and made his MLB debut in 1942. His career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army and saw combat in Europe, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After the war, Spahn returned to baseball and quickly established himself as a top pitcher. He won 20 or more games in a season 13 times, leading the National League in wins eight times. Spahn also pitched two no-hitters, won the Cy Young Award in 1957, and was a 17-time All-Star. He retired with 363 career wins, the most by a left-handed pitcher and the sixth most in MLB history.
